Ashes 2021/22: Jhye Richardson Replaces Hazlewood For 2nd Test

The Ashes 2021/22 was off to a brilliant start as Australia went on to crush the visitors at The Gabba, completing an easy victory of 9 wickets when they had to chase just 20 in their 2nd innings. The battle is a long one which spans 5 intense Tests and we’re all set for the 2nd Test now which begins tomorrow, 16th December 2021, at the Adelaide Oval.

Ashes 2021/22: Jhye Richardson Replaces Hazlewood For 2nd Test

Australia always chooses their playing eleven way ahead of the game and they’ve done that again, announcing Jhye Richardson to come in for leading Test pacer, Josh Hazlewood. While Hazlewood has been excelling in the T20 format of late, the longest format is where he’s the most dangerous and it is actually a bit of a loss for the Aussies, but they believe they have a suitable replacement.

Richardson has played 2 Tests before for Australia and picked 6 wickets in those games but of late, he’s been a wicket-taking machine. In his last 3 FC games for Western Australia, he’s picked up 20 wickets and has been contributing with the bat too. In BBL 2020/21, he ended as the top wicket-taker as well. He’s got serious pace and you combine that with swing early, and it’s a dangerous combination.

However, England may actually like this replacement since Hazlewood has tormented them with his line and length over the years, though he managed only 3 wickets in the 1st Test at The Gabba. Richardson could wreck the top order if he’s having a good day but the questions will always be whether he can continue that for 90 overs a day and for 5 days in a Test match.

He hasn’t been tested at the longest format for Australia too many times and it’s going to be an interesting decision. Hazlewood picked up a side strain in the first game and that’s the reason he’ll be left out here and on the other hand, opening batsman David Warner was deemed fit to play the 2nd Test as well.
